Bourbon inventory steadily declined from 1974 until 2006, when the numbers started to go back up. During each year from 2012 to 2015, Kentucky distillers’ combined total production has exceeded the million-barrel mark. And consumer demand for whiskey just keeps growing.

Overall sales of bourbon, rye, and Tennessee whiskey increased by 5.4% in 2015, thanks to thirsts both foreign and domestic, says an economic-impact study conducted in 2016 by the University of Louisville’s Urban Studies Institute in conjunction with the KDA. Kentucky alone exported $311 million of whiskey to other countries in 2015, up $10 million from 2010, according to the study. Its top five international customers were Canada, the United Kingdom, Mexico, China and France, according to US Census Bureau Foreign Trade data.

“Bourbon has started to get a more level playing field with Scotch, its number-one competitor,” Gregory says. “People who had never really tasted it before are finding that they like it. For the first time ever, we’ve seen the international bourbon market overtake the national market in sales.”

Sales aren’t the only measure of bourbon’s importance to Kentucky, however. Bourbon also creates tax revenue—more than $190 million for local and state governments, the economic-impact study says—and good-paying jobs.

So far in the 21st century, the distilling industry has proved to be if not recession-proof, then certainly recession-resilient: while overall manufacturing employment in Kentucky has dropped by 26.3% since 2000, distilling employment has grown by 20.8%, with an average annual salary of $95,089. Kentucky farmers have also benefited from the bourbon boom: use of locally grown corn increased by 65% from 2014 to 2016. Altogether, distilling pours $8.5 billion into Kentucky’s economy, an increase of $1 billion in just two years.
